The Minardi M86 was a Formula One car introduced for the 1986 season and built by Italian manufacturer Minardi. The car was an evolution of the 1985 chassis, utilizing the same chassis and the same Alfa Romeo engine. It was driven by the two-time Formula One Driver's Champion and veteran racer Michele Alboreto and one-time Grand Prix winner Piercarlo Ghinzani. The chassis was designed by Gustav Brunner and made from an aluminium monocoque with an integrated fuel tank and composite carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) bodywork and aerodynamic components. The suspension featured double wishbones at the front and a lower A-arm at the rear with twin dampers and single coil springs at each corner. This arrangement was accompanied by a rack-and-pinion steering system and 13" aluminum wheels. The powertrain consisted of an Alfa Romeo V8 engine with Bosch electronic injection and Bosch four valve cylinder heads. The engine had 4.0 liters of displacement and was capable of producing a maximum output of 550 bhp at 11,500 rpm. It was linked to the wheels by a six-speed manual gearbox and a limited slip differential. Overall, the Minardi M86 was a competent albeit inferior racer due to being handicapped by a small budget and lack of manufacturing resources. It was overshadowed by the superior Ferrari and Williams cars but the competitiveness of its driver roster was highlighted by a few strong race results, including Alboreto's second place finish in South Africa and Ghinzani's seventh place at the French Grand Prix.
