The Ligier JS9 F1 OW 1978 is an iconic Formula One car with a unique design that has been remembered ever since. It was the first re-designed car of the Ligier after their previous, unsuccessful JS7 and JS8 models. The 1978 Ligier was distinguished by an aerodynamic body. It had a fuel-efficient and lightweight aluminium monocoque chassis with a shorter wheelbase that provided improved stability and cornering performance. It was fitted with a Cosworth engine that produced 490 horsepower at 12,500rpm, allowing the F1 OW to reach a top speed of 215mph. The JS9 had 14in wheels with a four-wheel independent double-wishbone suspension system that allowed drivers to control the pitch and roll of the vehicle. It was also fitted with six-piston front and four-piston rear caliper brakes with ventilated discs for superior braking performance. On the front, the car featured an enlarged air scoop and a chin spoiler to provide additional downforce. The bodywork was made out of aluminium and kevlar, providing extra strength and durability. When it came to driving the Ligier, the car had excellent handling and control thanks to its improved suspension and powerful engine. The car was easy to drive and, combined with its aerodynamics, allowed drivers to push the F1 OW to its maximum potential. Even though it wasn't the complete package, the JS9 was a very popular car and its classic styling and memorable performance will be remembered forever.
