The Ligier JS17 F1 GP OW 1982 is a Formula One racing car which was built by French constructor Ligier in 1982. It was the second car designed and built by the team. The involvement of the French constructor came after Ligier had an unsuccessful 1981 season, with the team finishing fourth in the constructors championship. The JS17 chassis was designed by Michel Tetu and Gerard Ducarouge. It was powered by a 3.0-litre V12 engine which was built by Matra. With this engine, the car had an impressive power output of over 600bhp. The car featured a de Dion rear suspension which gave the driver increased control with fast cornering. The cars aerodynamics were exceptional for its time, featuring a high nose and a downward-sloping rear wing which gave maximum downforce. The JS17 also had an impressive chassis which was made of carbon fibre and Kevlar in order to increase the cars stability at high-speeds. The JS17 was the first Ligier to feature a six-speed manual gearbox and a semi-automatic clutch. It also featured an improved driver aid system which automatically adjusted the cars settings based on the drivers inputs. This allowed the driver to concentrate on their racing. All of these features combined to make the Ligier JS17 F1 GPOW 1982 an extremely competitive machine. Its reliability and stability made it popular among drivers and teams alike. The car firmly established Ligier as a leader in Formula One, and it was the first of many successful Formula One cars built by the French constructor.
