The Ligier JS39F1OW (originally known as the John Player Special) was the 1993 racing machine used by the Ligier Formula One team during the 1993 Formula One racing season. It was renowned for its aerodynamic design and excellent performance, making it one of the most successful Formula One cars of its era and one of the most recognizable F1 cars in history. The JS39F1OW was powered by a Ford-Cosworth 3.5-litre V10 engine, producing 690 horsepower at 12,000 rpm, which gave it incredibly impressive acceleration and top speeds. The car had a total weight of 540kg, and featured a carbon-fibre and honeycomb monocoque chassis with an extensive aerodynamic design package. This package included a large front wing, a rear wing, and several other aerodynamic elements such as side pods, an aerofoil, dive planes, and side skirts. The cars suspension system consisted of double wishbones and push-rods at the front and pull-rods and wishbones at the rear, along with springs and shocks for added comfort and performance. The car also boasted a powerful braking system. The combination of Brembo calipers and carbon fibre discs offered a fantastic deceleration package, while the flat-bottomed design of the car improved stability and grip for steering and cornering. The 9-litre fuel tank provided a range of over 400 kilometres and could be used to provide additional downforce or stability through the use of ballast tanks. Driver responsiveness and car control was also excellent in the Ligier JS39F1OW, with its advanced electronic control system and racing-style pedals. With drivers such as Damon Hill and Jean Alesi behind the wheel, the JS39F1OW earned Ligier four podiums during the 1993 season, cementing its legacy as one of the most iconic Formula One cars of all time.
