The Tyrrell 016 Formula One car (F1 OW 1987) is a classic example of the late 1980s F1 era. Manufactured by Tyrrell Racing, the 016 was powered by a 262 bhp, 3.5 litre Cosworth DFV V8 engine and had a lightweight composite chassis and a 6-speed manual gearbox. The distinctive 'teardrop-shaped' wedge-fronted aerodynamics of the 016 revolutionized the way F1 cars were designed. The car was a consistent performer, achieving 13 points in the 1987 Championship. The Tyrrell 016's design featured a raised splitter at the front, low cambered nose cone, 'bat-wing' shape side-pods and a single-deck rear wing mounted centrally. The result of this aerodynamic design was remarkably good grip and stability under braking and during cornering. This car was driven by Jonathan Palmer and Pierre-Henri Raphanel during the 1987 season with some success. The 016 is a part of F1 history and showcases the original design concept that changed the way F1 cars are designed today.
