The Tyrrell 012 was a Formula One (F1) Grand Prix (GP) race car produced in 1983 by the Tyrrell Racing Organisation. This single-seater racing car was designed by Tony Southgate and Harvey Postlethwaite; its body was made out of a sleek composite of carbon fiber and Kevlar. The chassis was made from an aluminum honeycomb monocoque cladded in steel sheets for protection. The car featured an effective aero-package, as well as a lightweight structure, steering wheel with multiple control buttons and levers, higher sills allowing unobstructed driver vision while cornering, greater upper lateral stiffness for better handling, and an overall smaller wheelbase and track width. With its state-of-the-art technologies and materials, the Tyrrell 012 was able to achieve improved weight distribution, superior aerodynamic performance and brake cooling. The engine of this vehicle was a Ford Cosworth DFV, capable of producing 680 bhp and giving a top speed of almost 215mp/h. It had a five-speed manual transmission, with a 0-60mph time of approximately 3 seconds. The durability of the Tyrrell 012 is evident: the car raced in 6 Grand Prix events between 1983 and 1984 and achieved modest successes throughout.
