The Tyrrell 017 F1 OW 1988 was a high-performance single-seater racing car designed and built by Tyrrell and powered by a turbocharged engine. The car proved to be competitive in its debut Formula One season, despite a lack of power compared to rivals. The Tyrrell 017 featured a simple and robust chassis design with double wishbone suspension at each corner. The engine was mounted longitudinally behind the driver and featured a 1400 cc Renault turbocharged engine producing 500 BHP at 11,500 RPM. The car was also capable of a top speed of 202 mph and featured aerodynamic elements such as front air dams, side skirts, rear wings and a rear diffuser. The car utilised slick tyres and featured a six-speed manual transmission to maximise land-speed capability. The same transmission was used in the IndyCar formula. The car was equipped with a Hewland FTR transaxle and featured four-wheel drive to assist with acceleration off the line. The car was also fitted with its unique multi-tubular exhaust system designed to reduce turbulence and thus improve speed and handling. The steering was well-weighted and responsive and the overall design of the car allowed for an exceptionally light and nimble driving experience. The Tyrrell 017 was also relatively reliable meaning it had a greater chance of lasting a whole race than its immediate rival the Williams FW12. The Tyrrell 017 F1 OW 1988 embodied the companys performance values and innovation, being reliable and competitive despite lacking the extreme performance of the opposition.
