The 1973 Trabant 601 Sedan is a classic East German car that was manufactured in East Berlin by VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau. Upon release it was the first Trabant model to feature the blow-molded plastic technology, making it a revolutionary car at the time. The 601 Sedan had a two-cylinder, two-stroke engine with a capacity of 598cc that produced 24HP and a 4-speed manual transmission. Its exterior is quite boxy and heavy looking, with its plastic body panels having great resistance to corrosion and rust, while its chassis and running gear were made of heavier steel. Overall, this car had a simplistic design, featuring a steel roof, metal bumpers, basic chrome trim, and hubcaps with centre crests. Despite its size, the 601 Sedan could fit up to four people, while its wagon version could up to five. The interior of the car had an equally simple design, featuring imitation leather seats, rubber mats, and plastics for all panels and trim. Although a basic car, the 601 Sedan provided good visibility, decent driving performance and a surprisingly comfortable ride. All in all, the 1973 Trabant 601 Sedan is a unique automobile that has become a cult car of automotive history and still remains an cult favorite worldwide.
