The Trabant 601 Sedan of 1978 is a car that brought East German engineering to the masses. It is a Boxy, and unrefined vehicle, that has become an iconic symbol in some parts of the world due to its mass-production. Built on a 2-cylinder air-cooled, two-stroke engine, the Trabant had a unique place in East German history. Despite its unappealing looks, it was an extraordinarily reliable car that was known for its steel-aluminum panels and perfect engineering. The two-stroke engines come in two sizes; a smaller 499 cc engine and a larger 600 cc engine, both producing an abysmal 26 hp. Although not very powerful, it was a relatively fuel-efficient vehicle. The 601 model was the most popular, as it was the largest and roomiest model. It had plenty of headroom, and even featured front-wheel drive, making it very practical. The design of the car was very utilitarian, and could best be described as "uniquely-boxy". It was adorned with manual crank windows, and featured a simple bench seating. Its interior had minimal features and was usually painted in light grey. It also had quite soft suspension, and a short turning radius, helping with maneuverability. Exterior wise, the car was particularly plain. It had a large one-piece front light grille, as well as a short hood and large fenders that were great for protection from gravel and debris kicked up by the road. The Trabant did not have a chromed look, and instead had an unpainted, metal finish. Its functional rubber bumpers helped it to be quite durable, and although not a great looker, it was clearly designed for practicality. The Trabant 601 Sedan of 1978 was an example of sturdy engineering. It was reliable, roomy, and fuel-efficient, even if its looks were not its greatest quality. It was built to last, and now serves an iconic representation of the East German automotive industry history.
