The iconic Trabant 601S sedan made its appearance in 1960 as part of the East German auto makers highest order. A unique predecessor to the rest of the Cold War vehicles, this car gained a legendary status for its bizarre and innovative design. The 601S was built with a reliable two-stroke engine, a simple, all-metal construction, and a body that was made of a combination of Duroplast, a fiberglass-like material, and cloth-reinforced plasticall of which was painted in classic Trabant hues of cream or light blue. The classic 601S had a unique, futuristic look, with the large and rounded body taking up most of the cars visual space. It had an eye-catching, horizontally slanted full grille with two headlights near the top, and two pleated-slit turn signal runs right down the grilles center. The trunk featured an integrated tailgate, and the bulging rear end was weirdly angular and stylish as it featured square taillight openings and a pair of lips either side of the license plate. The cabin was roomy and quiet, thanks to its engineering and one-piece design. Noteworthy details included a bakelite steering wheel, dome lights, square-shaped headlights, a fuel gauge, and adjustable, easy-to-use controls for the 411-cc two-cylinder engine. The vehicles steering and handling were backed by a reliable, four-speed manual transmission and improved suspension system, making for an enjoyable drive. The Trabant 601S proved to be a perfect car for its time and quite ahead of its competition from the West. With its economical engine, strong yet lightweight construction, and its one-of-a-kind styling, the 601S sedans have become exceedingly rare automobiles, sought by car enthusiasts and historians alike.
