The Lotus 87 F1 OW 1981 is a true classic of Formula One Racing. It was the penultimate iteration of the iconic Lotus 81 and the third and final in the series designed by legendary engineer and designer Colin Chapman. This Scottish-born innovator and his team at Team Lotus truly revolutionized the sport in the late 1970s and early '80s. The Lotus 87 was one of the most successful Grand Prix cars of its era, and its defining feature was its revolutionary aerodynamic design. Specifically, it featured a fullwidth, wrap-around rear wing and an inverted air scoop, as well as an aerodynamic nosecone which generated downforce under braking. This feature allowed the car to handle better in the corners and provided the car with greater cornering speed and stability. The 87 also used a four-speed Hewland manual gearbox, complete with an electronic rev limiter, and a Ford-Cosworth DFV V8 3.0- Litre producing around 500 bhp of power. All of these components were locked in place by a four-wheel independent suspension system, supported by a solid aluminium frame. The 87 was powered by a 3.5l Ford Cosworth DFV V8, which made a whopping 500bhp at maximum power. This level of thrust was necessary to keep the car competitive during long circuits. At the hands of former Formula One champion Alan Jones, the 87 finished second in the 1981 World Championship. After that, Lotus continued to tinker with the design, but the 87 was already a classic. With distinct lines and reliable performance, the Lotus 87 F1 OW 1981 positively defined the era.
