The Lotus Climax F1 GP OW 1958 engine is a marvel of engineering and design. Designed to power the first F1 Grand Prix racing car, the Lotus 18 and its successor, the Lotus Climax 25, the engine housed a 1.5-litre inline four-cylinder engine and featured a total of four valves per cylinder. It was rated at around 175-180 horsepower (hp). The engine was constructed from light alloy components and utilized a double overhead camshaft driven by a vertical shaft at the rear of the engine. The valve train used leverage to open and close the valves, with the camshaft located low in the engine block. This helped reduce overall vibration and improve power. In addition, the Lotus Climax F1 GP OW 1958 engine featured two Weber 45DCOE carburetors, an alternator, and a conventional four-stroke ignition system. The power output increased up to 240hp for the Lotus 18, and to a staggering 300 hp for its successor. The engine was lightweight and efficient, with exceptional reliability and a powerful output. Lotus choice to go with this engine was a major factor in helping their cars become not only extremely fast, but also incredibly efficient and reliable. It is no wonder it has become a popular choice for historic replica cars and continues to be incredibly revered by motorsport enthusiasts around the world.
