The Lotus 80 F1 OW 1979 is an iconic Formula 1 car that raced in the 1979 season. This single-seater racing car was produced and designed by Team Lotus and was an evolution of the Lotus 79 model, which had been immensely successful in the 1978 season. The design of the Lotus 80 was extremely aerodynamically efficient, featuring a sharp wedge shape and a finely tuned, wedge-shaped monocoque bodywork. This made the car classically elegant and distinctive. The car was powered by a Ford Cosworth DFV 3.0-litre V8 engine, which delivered epic power to the rear wheels. It had a manual five-speed Hewland gearbox, with the fifth gear being a special overdrive gear. The car was built on a space frame chassis, which was more rigid and lighter than its predecessors, and had an adjustable steel roll bar. The most noticeable external feature of this car was its specially designed near-horizontally mounted front wing, which produced superior downforce at the front. The car was equipped with double-wishbone suspension at the front and rear, as well as adjustable inboard coil-over shocks and springs. All these attributes with their ideal weight distribution and sum of 810 kg, provided this car with impeccable handling, which was a key factor in the Lotus 80s success on the race tracks.
