The Lotus 21 OW Formula One car of 1961 was a radical departure from the classic single-seaters of the era. With its sleek and low profile, it redefined the aerodynamics of motor racing, lifting the Lotus name even higher in the pantheon of motorsport. Its space frame chassis featured a centrally located single seat, giving it a striking appearance. Up front, the car featured a strong hoop-style roll bar along with an enclosed nosecone that blended in perfectly with the aerodynamic shape of the car. At the rear an innovative rear wing setup provided much needed downforce. The most prominent feature of the car, however, was its Hewland 5 speed gearbox, which was mounted behind the driver and coupled to a 1.5 liter Coventry Climax engine. This innovative powertrain made the cars both lightweight and powerful, enabling it to compete with the best on the track. The Lotus 21 boasted a top speed of over 140mph and its exceptional performance, along with its timeless good looks, made it a timeless classic among the greats of Formula One.
