The Lotus 72F1 GP OW 1972 was a revolutionary Formula 1 race car that changed the face of Formula 1 racing. Designed by Colin Chapman and Maurice Phillippe, the car was a radical departure from traditions of open-wheeler cars of the era. It featured an advanced aerodynamic design that included two full-width sidepods flanking the cockpit, with intakes for the radiator and a high rear spoiler for downforce. This allowed for an enormous increase in cornering speed and stability over traditional race cars. The engine was a Ford Cosworth DFV3.0L V8, famous for its power and reliability, capable of producing 400bhp. The chassis was all-aluminium monocoque, with the suspension and brakes designed for competition use. The wheels were magnesium, making them light and extremely strong. The transmission was a Hewland LG500 5-speed manual gearbox. This car was an absolute beast, and helped revolutionize the way racing cars are designed. Despite its age, it is still seen in historic racing, paying homage to the car that started it all.
