The Object 279 was a Soviet experimental heavy tank designed in the late 1950s as a response to the threat of nuclear war. The tank was intended to operate in highly radioactive environments and was designed with several unique features to accomplish this mission. The Object 279 had a distinctive four-track layout that allowed it to distribute its weight over a larger surface area, reducing the pressure on the ground and increasing its off-road mobility. The tank also had a low profile and a thick layer of armor that provided excellent protection against conventional and nuclear weapons. The tank was armed with a 130mm main gun and a secondary 14.5mm heavy machine gun for anti-aircraft defense. It also had a range of sensors and communication equipment to aid in battlefield awareness. Despite its promising design, the Object 279 never entered production due to its high cost and the development of more advanced tanks, such as the T-64 and T-72. However, several prototypes were built and tested, and the tank remains an important piece of Soviet military technology history.
