The Object 278 is a unique heavy tank developed in the 1950s by the Soviet Union to confront NATO forces during the Cold War. It was a prototype tank, and never entered production. The Object 278 is the successor to the famous IS-4, and was designed to provide more protection. It features an impressive set of defensive measures, including a thicker and more sloped armor, reinforced with additional spaced armor. The primary armament was a 100mm main gun, with the option of a 155mm gun. The gun was mounted in a heavily armored turret, with strong lines around the circumference and thick cast steel armor. The Object 278 also featured an advanced suspension system, with larger, high-quality roadwheels able to easily traverse difficult terrain. It was powered by an A-02 diesel engine, delivering 1250 horsepower and giving it a maximum speed of 40 km/h. Although it was never formally adopted, the Object 278 is remembered due to its superiority in defense. Its highly sophisticated design made it virtually impenetrable, and its mobility made it superior to many other machines of its time. It is a true icon of the Cold War period, and one of the most innovative projects the Soviets ever developed.
