The Maus, officially designated Panzerkampfwagen VIII Maus, was a German super-heavy tank prototype developed during World War II. It was one of the largest and heaviest tanks ever built, and it represented Germanys attempt to create a formidable armored vehicle capable of breaking through enemy lines and engaging fortified positions. The Maus was designed to weigh approximately 188 tons, making it significantly heavier than any other tank of its time. It was armed with a 128mm KwK 44 L/55 gun, one of the most powerful tank guns of World War II, along with a coaxial 75mm KwK 44 L/36.5 gun for engaging infantry and soft targets. In terms of armor protection, the Maus featured extremely thick armor plating, ranging from 150mm to 220mm in thickness, providing exceptional protection against enemy fire. Its armor was virtually impervious to most contemporary anti-tank weapons, including high-explosive shells and armor-piercing rounds. Despite its impressive size, firepower, and armor protection, the Maus faced several challenges during its development and testing. Its immense weight made it difficult to transport and maneuver, and it suffered from mechanical reliability issues, particularly with its transmission and suspension systems. Only two Maus prototypes were ever completed, and neither saw combat during World War II. One prototype was captured by Soviet forces during the Battle of Berlin in 1945, while the other was destroyed by its crew to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. Today, both prototypes are preserved in museums as rare examples of super-heavy tank development during World War II.
