The Landkreuzer P. 1000 Ratte (literally Land Cruiser P. 1000 Rat) was a proposed super-heavy tank project of Nazi Germany during World War II. It was conceived as an extremely large and heavily armed armored vehicle, intended to support ground operations and break through heavily fortified enemy positions. The Ratte was envisioned to be a colossal machine, weighing approximately 1,000 metric tons and measuring around 35 meters in length. It was proposed to be armed with multiple large-caliber guns, including 280mm naval guns or 128mm anti-tank guns, as well as numerous machine guns for anti-infantry defense. The armor protection of the Ratte was expected to be formidable, with armor plating ranging from 150mm to 360mm in thickness, providing extensive protection against enemy fire. Its massive size and weight were intended to make it impervious to most conventional anti-tank weapons of the time. Despite ambitious plans and detailed design studies, the Ratte project never progressed beyond the initial planning stages. The immense logistical challenges involved in constructing such a massive vehicle, combined with the increasing pressure of the war and shifting priorities within the German military, led to the cancellation of the project. While the Landkreuzer P. 1000 Ratte remains a fascinating example of ambitious engineering and military planning during World War II, it ultimately existed only on paper, and no prototypes were ever built. Today, it is remembered as one of the most extreme and audacious tank projects of the war.
