The Leichttraktor (VK 31) was one of the first attempts by Germany to develop a modern tracked armored vehicle after World War I. It was designed in the early 1920s as part of Germanys efforts to circumvent the restrictions on military development imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. The Leichttraktor was a light tank prototype that incorporated several innovative features for its time. It was powered by a Daimler-Benz M 36 gasoline engine, which provided a top speed of around 20 km/h (12 mph) and good maneuverability on the battlefield. Armament on the Leichttraktor consisted of a single 37mm cannon and one or two 7.92mm machine guns. While modest by later standards, this armament was typical for tanks of the era and was sufficient for engaging enemy infantry and light vehicles. The armor protection of the Leichttraktor was relatively thin, ranging from 7mm to 14mm in thickness, and offered limited defense against enemy fire. However, it was comparable to other tanks of its time and provided some protection for the crew against small arms fire and shell fragments. Despite its promising design, the Leichttraktor did not enter mass production, and only a small number of prototypes were built. However, it served as a valuable testing platform for the development of future German tank designs, and many of its features and innovations were incorporated into later models.
