The Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf. G (Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. G) was a German medium tank that saw extensive service during World War II, playing a critical role in the early Blitzkrieg campaigns and beyond. Introduced in 1940, the Ausf. G variant represented a significant improvement over its predecessors, incorporating enhancements in firepower, armor, and mobility. Armed with a 5 cm KwK 38 L/42 main gun, the Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. G was capable of effectively engaging enemy tanks and fortified positions. This gun provided improved armor penetration capabilities compared to earlier versions, making it more formidable in armored engagements. Additionally, it was equipped with two 7.92 mm MG34 machine guns, one coaxial with the main gun and the other mounted in the hull, for engaging infantry and soft targets. The armor protection of the Ausf. G was enhanced, with the frontal armor thickness reaching up to 50 mm, providing increased survivability against enemy fire. The tanks hull and turret design underwent improvements to optimize crew protection and combat effectiveness on the battlefield. Powered by a Maybach HL 120 TRM engine generating 300 horsepower, the Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. G had a top speed of approximately 40 km/h (25 mph) on roads, which facilitated rapid maneuverability and tactical flexibility during operations. Its operational range was about 155 kilometers (96 miles), sufficient for conducting offensive and defensive maneuvers. The Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. G played a significant role in the early successes of the German Blitzkrieg tactics, particularly in the invasions of Poland, France, and the Soviet Union. While it was eventually outclassed by heavier and more heavily armored tanks, the Ausf. G remained in service throughout the war in various roles, demonstrating its versatility and adaptability in different combat environments. On our website you can download a drawing of Pz.Kpfw.
