The Surtees TS14 F1 was a Formula One racing car designed and built by the John Surtees Racing Organisation (Surtees Racing) for the 1973 season. The TS14 was the first chassis completely built and raced by Surtees under their own name. It was a further development of the TS5, which had been built by Surtees in 1972 to house the Cosworth DFV V8 engine. The TS14 was an open-wheel single-seater racing car, constructed from a monocoque chassis built from a box-section tubular steel frame and aluminium honeycomb panels, with a semi-monocoque rear subframe. The suspension comprised double wishbones at the front, and top and lower links plus an anti-roll bar at the rear. The power was provided by a 255 horsepower 3.0L Ford Cosworth DFV V8 engine, mounted in a straightforward bolt-in steel subframe. The car was designed around aerodynamic principles, with the bodywork being formed of a low, flat-sided wedge, with small air intake scoops at either side to feed the engine. The on-board airbox was also located inside the cockpit, although it was soon replaced by an external airbox for better cooling. There were also leading edge slats which could be adjusted to provide more downforce. The car had a top speed of around 215mph, with a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds. It had a very low centre of gravity and aerodynamic downforce which enabled it to stay stable at high speeds. The car also featured a carbon fibre and flame-proof Kevlar crash protection system, and a windscreen wiper system to improve visibility. In addition, the TS14 had a unique system of interlinked suspension that gave the car an unparalleled amount of feel when cornering. The TS14 was a highly competitive car in 1973, with the team's driver John Surtees narrowly missing out on being crowned World Champion, finishing in second place. The TS14 represented a significant step forward in terms of design and development for Surtees Racing, and continues to be respected and admired for its performance and design to this day.
