The Sauber C18 F1 OW 1999 was a racing car specifically designed to compete in the 1999 Formula One World Championship. It was the first and only car Sauber ever produced for this series. The Sauber C18 F1 OW was a great feat of engineering, combining both innovative design and leading-edge technology. The aerodynamics of the car were highly advanced, allowing for increased levels of downforce and increased stability at high speed. Carbon fibre composite technology was used in the manufacture of the cars monocoque, both helping to keep the weight down and making the car stiffer and more responsive. The Sauber C18 F1 OW 1999 featured a Ferrari-designed V10 engine mounted in the back of the car. This 3.0-litre engine produced 700 horsepower and was considered to be one of the most powerful engines in the series, allowing the C18 to hit top speeds of 335 km/h. The car was also equipped with a 4-speed semi-automatic gearbox, which gave the drivers seamless and accurate shifts from gear to gear. This, combined with an advanced system of active suspension made the on-track performance of the C18 very impressive. In spite of its success, the C18 F1 OW was overshadowed by more famous cars from other manufacturers and drivers, primarily due to the fact that Peter Sauber and Jean Alesi never claimed a podium finish with the car. However, it still remains one of the most iconic Sauber Formula One cars ever produced.
