The Macchi MC.72 was an experimental singleseat racing hydroplane. Designed by Macchi Aeronautica the Italian Company with the guidance of Mario Castoldi the designer to enter the Schneider race in 1931 which due to fatal at that time problems with the engine it did not participate in. Despite the loss of two vehicles on the tests its development continued. First in 1933 then a year later Ajello the pilot set and had held the world speed record of 709.209 kmh for 5 years.
