The LT vz. 38, also known as the Pz.Kpfw. 38(t) in German service, was a Czechoslovak-designed light tank that became renowned for its versatility and effectiveness during World War II. It featured a 37 mm koda A7 gun as its main armament, capable of engaging both enemy tanks and infantry, alongside a coaxial machine gun for anti-infantry defense. The tanks armor ranged from 8 mm to 25 mm, offering basic protection against small arms and shell fragments but limited against heavier weapons. The LT vz. 38 was notable for its mobility, powered by a Praga EPA/2 6-cylinder engine generating 125 horsepower, which allowed it to achieve speeds up to 42 km/h on roads. This mobility made it well-suited for reconnaissance and rapid deployment roles on the battlefield. It was widely used by German forces after the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939, where it served across various fronts including the early campaigns in Poland, France, and the Soviet Union. The tanks success lay in its robust design and Czech engineering, which provided a balance of firepower, mobility, and reliability. Over 1,400 LT vz. 38 tanks were produced, underscoring its significant contribution to German armored forces in the early stages of the war before it was gradually replaced by more advanced tank designs.
