Specifications M11/39 blueprint

The M11/39 was an Italian medium tank developed in the late 1930s and used during the early stages of World War II. Designed by Fiat-Ansaldo, it was intended to provide a mobile armored platform with greater firepower and armor protection than the earlier Fiat L3 tankettes. The M11/39 was armed with a 37 mm Vickers-Terni L/40 gun mounted in the hull, which was an unusual design choice as most contemporary tanks had their main armament in a turret. This hull-mounted gun was intended for engaging enemy armor and fortifications. Additionally, the tank featured a turret-mounted 8 mm Breda 38 machine gun for anti-infantry and anti-aircraft defense. Armor protection on the M11/39 ranged from 6 mm to 30 mm, offering basic defense against small arms fire and shell fragments. However, the relatively thin armor made it vulnerable to anti-tank weapons and larger caliber rounds. The tank was powered by a Fiat SPA 8T diesel engine producing 105 horsepower, allowing it to reach a top speed of around 32 km/h (20 mph) on roads. Its operational range was approximately 200 kilometers (124 miles), making it suitable for various combat operations within its range limitations. The M11/39 saw combat primarily in North Africa during the early years of World War II. It was first used in the Italian invasion of Egypt in 1940 and later in the Western Desert Campaign. While its design was innovative for its time, the M11/39 was quickly outclassed by more advanced Allied tanks, such as the British Matilda II and Crusader. Its performance in combat was hampered by its mechanical unreliability, inadequate armor, and the limited traverse of its main gun. Despite its shortcomings, the M11/39 played a role in the development of subsequent Italian tank designs, such as the M13/40 and M14/41, which addressed many of the M11/39s deficiencies. The tanks service history reflects the challenges faced by Italian armored forces during the early stages of World War II and the rapid evolution of tank warfare during the conflict.
