The McLaren MP4/9 OW was a Formula One race car produced by McLaren for the 1994 season. It was a continuation of the successful MP4/8 chassis and featured the same semi-domed engine cover but with a modified, wider monocoque to accommodate wider tires. The MP4/9 was driven by Mika Hkkinen and Martin Brundle. The MP4/9 was McLarens first car to feature a deeply grooved rear wing, which aided in stability and provided downforce. The car was powered by a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated Ford-Cosworth engine, which produced over 700 HP. The MP4/9 also featured McLarens innovative active suspension system which allowed the car to adjust to changes in track conditions as well as allowing the drivers to customize their setup. The aerodynamic package of the car had a multitude of features which allowed the car to hug the track and stick to the tarmac. The car had two horizontal Gurney Flaps, which reduced drag and increased downforce, as well as a deep diffuser which created a low pressure zone beneath the car and increased downforce. The McLaren MP4/9s handling allowed it to be very competitive and it eventually won the Canadian, Hungarian and Italian Grand Prix in 1994. Despite this, McLaren still only ended that season third in the Constructors Championship. The car looks stunning in its white livery, standing out instantly on the track and showing off its complex aerodynamic package. It remains a classic from the late 90s Formula One era.
