The march 701 F1 OW 1970 is a single-seater open-wheel racing car. It was developed by March Engineering and raced in Formula One events in the 1970 season. The 701 featured a wide track and wheelbase to accommodate the powerful 3-liter Cosworth DFV V8 engine, which enabled it to reach top speeds of over 200 mph. The car was made of lightweight aluminum and fiberglass construction, and featured a front-hinged monocoque chassis. It featured a full width front wing with splitter and a rounded nose cone to reduce drag. The suspension was double wishbone with inboard springs and dampers, and the detachable steering box was provided by Maserati. The aerodynamic benefits of the 701's bodywork were quickly noticed, as the car could easily maintain its cornering speed even in high-speed turns. The 701 also featured some innovative features for the time, such as adjustable wheel hubs and a unique if obvious solution to cooling: water radiators mounted on the side of the car. It was one of the first Formula One cars to feature a single central nut, or wheel nut, to secure the wheels in place, which gave additional chassis rigidity but also reduced the number of crew members needed to a minimum. The 701 provided successful results in the 1970 season, with a fifth-place finish at the Monaco Grand Prix and third-place finishes in Canada and Mexico. Despite its success, the 701 was eventually replaced by newer models, such as the March 711, as the formula regulations evolved and competition grew. Today it is still a prized collectible among classic car fans, as a reminder of a historic era in Formula One racing.
