The Brabham BT45B F1 OW (Formula One Open Wheel) 1977 was an iconic design in the history of Formula One racing. Designed by legendary engineer Gordon Murray, it was the culmination of a long series of successful Brabham cars. Boasting a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis, and a Ford Cosworth DFV 3.0 litre engine producing around 530 bhp, it had a top speed of over 180 mph. It featured distinctive aerodynamic bodywork including distinctive gurney flaps on the rear wing and side pods, enabling greater top speeds and improved down-force. It also featured a Hewland 5 speed manual transmission and limited slip differential, allowing maximum acceleration and near perfect weight distribution. The car also had an adjustable ride height and suspension, featuring a double wishbone setup in the front and a wishbone/pushrod configuration at the rear, allowing for more precise handling. The BT45B was also very light for its time, weighing just 850kg, and had plenty of stopping power coming from the Girling vented disc brakes fitted all around. All these features combined made the BT45B a formidable and successful racing car, with drivers such as Niki Lauda and Carlos Reutemann taking it to podiums in the 1977 season.
