The ATS D3 F1 OW 1979 was a remarkable race car that was built for the 1979 Formula 1 season. It was designed by Giorgio Stirano and featured an aluminium monocoque chassis with rear-engined Cosworth DFV engine, giving it a competitive edge over other teams. It was powered by a 3.0 litre, naturally-aspirated engine producing around 540 horsepower. The suspension setup was independent double wishbones at the front and rear, with coil springs and anti-roll bars all round. The standard ATS F1 OW had a claimed top speed of around 250 km/h. For its time, the ATS D3 F1 OW 1979 was an exceedingly advanced vehicle in terms of aerodynamics and design. It featured a very low-profile, open-wheel, wedge-shaped body with a distinctive aerodynamic slant and nose. At the rear of the vehicle, the D3 featured a tall rear-wing to create extra downforce, which was an innovative touch of the era. The car also featured six-spoke magnesium alloy wheels and Goodyear Eagle Racing tyres. The ATS D3 F1 OW 1979 was an important race car in the annals of Formula 1 and was pushed to its limits by some of the greatest drivers of the day, including Niki Lauda, Jean-Pierre Jabouille, and Alan Jones. It proved to be a consistent competitor in races and ultimately helped draw the attention of the sports international characters. Despite not winning any Grand Prix, it was a stalwart competitor that deserved its much-deserved place in Formula 1 history.
