The Sukhoi Su-9 is a Soviet-era hybrid fighter aircraft that was designed for multi-role missions and was a departure from the traditional Soviet fighter designs. Developed in the early 1950s, the Su-9 was the last piston-engined fighter to enter active service with the Soviet Air Force. Powered by two Klimov VK-1 turbojet engines, the Su-9 was capable of reaching a maximum speed of 718 mph (1150 km/h). It had a range of over 1532 miles (2465 km) with external tanks making it an exceptionally capable aircraft. The Su-9 featured a unique flex-wing design and could be configured for different operational requirements such as ground-attack or air superiority missions. Its armament included two 23 mm NR-23 cannons in the nose as well as a range of bombs and rockets that had to be mounted under the wings. Another notable feature of the Su-9 was its ejection seat which allowed the pilot to escape the fighter in case of emergency. The Su-9 was a formidable fighter aircraft and saw action in several combat operations throughout the Cold War. Its agility and durable design stood the test of time and provided the Soviet air force with a reliable and capable fighter aircraft. The Su-9 served faithfully up until the early 1980s when it was eventually replaced by more advanced designs.
