The PZL 46 Sum is a single-engine, single-seater Polish-made military aircraft employed in the early 1950s during the Cold War. It was used by the Polish Air Force and Navy as an advanced trainer aircraft and for firefighting and observation missions. The Sum was designed by Wsiewolod Jakimiuk from the Polish Aviation Institute and built by the PZL aircraft factory. The sleek, all-metal construction of the Sum features low wings and a fixed tailwheel landing gear. It is powered by a trusty Ivchenko AI-14 nine-cylinder radial engine that generates 888 horsepower. To handle these power-hungry Soviet-made engines, the sturdy airframe is outfitted with relatively wide-chord retractable flaps for improved handling during take-offs and landings. The Sum is armed with two 7.7mm machine guns placed in the wings and can also carry bombs and rockets for ground attack missions. It can also act as a reconnaissance aircraft, as it is outfitted with an advanced camera and wireless radio transmission system. On the later versions, the wings were fitted with extra fuel tanks to extend the range. The Sum is known to be reliable and extremely agile in the air. It is capable of flying at a maximum speed of 220 mph and can reach heights of up to 23,000 feet. Its sturdiness allows the pilot to perform complex aerobatic maneuvers with relative ease. That, combined with its low maintenance requirements and cheap acquisition cost, makes the Sum a valuable asset in the Polish Air Force.
