The North American B45 Tornado was the first American serial jet bomber. Developed by North American Aviation as opposed to the German Arado Ar 234 Blitz jet bomber it was another important part of the nuclear deterrence program. 142 units were produced between 1948 and 1951. With the transfer to combat units there were constant delays first the development of the aircraft slowed down at the end of the war then in 19481949 due to insufficient funding of the military department the works were suspended. Aviation history included as the first aircraft to perform inflight refuelling the first bomber to drop a nuclear bomb 1951.
