The North American T 6G Texan was a single-engine, advanced trainer aircraft produced by North American Aviation in the 1950s. It was designed to offer new pilots a transition from basic trainers to more complex aircraft such as fighters and bombers. The aircraft was characterized by its sturdy design and durable construction, with an all-metal monocoque fuselage and flush-riveted metal wings. It was equipped with a Pratt & Whitney R-1340-AN-1 Wasp 9-cylinder radial engine that produced 600 horse power. This engine drove a pair of Hamilton Standard controllable-pitch propellers, giving the aircraft excellent speed and agility. The aircraft had a wingspan of 39 feet 11 inches and a length of 29 feet 9 inches. Its top speed was 240 mph and it had a range of 540 miles with a service ceiling of 24,500 feet. The T 6G Texan had a fully retractable landing gear and a wide, comfortable two-person cockpit with outstanding visibility. It was an iconic aircraft in its heyday and remains a favorite among model aircraft enthusiasts today.
