The Panzerkampfwagen I, often abbreviated as Pz.Kpfw. I or simply Pz.I, was a light tank developed by Germany in the interwar period. It was one of the first tanks produced by Germany following the restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. The Pz.I was designed as a training and reconnaissance tank rather than a frontline combat vehicle. It was relatively small and lightly armored, weighing around 5.4 tons. The tank was crewed by two personnel, typically a driver and a commander who also served as the gunner. Armament on the Pz.I varied depending on the specific variant, but it typically consisted of two 7.92mm MG13 machine guns, one mounted in the hull and one in a rotating turret. While adequate for engaging enemy infantry and light vehicles, the Pz.Is armament was insufficient for engaging enemy tanks. The armor protection of the Pz.I was also relatively thin, ranging from 6mm to 13mm in thickness, providing limited protection against small arms fire and shell fragments. Despite its limitations, the Pz.I played an important role in the early development of German armored warfare doctrine and served as a valuable training platform for German tank crews. It saw service during the early stages of World War II, particularly during the invasions of Poland and France, but was quickly phased out of frontline service as more advanced tank designs became available. Many Pz.I tanks were repurposed for other roles, such as reconnaissance vehicles or ammunition carriers, as the war progressed. On our website you can download a drawing of Pz.Kpfw.
