The Object 261 was a Soviet experimental self-propelled artillery vehicle developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It was designed to replace the older SU-122 and SU-152 self-propelled guns, which were in service with the Soviet Army at the time. The Object 261 was armed with a powerful 180mm gun, which was capable of firing a variety of ammunition types, including high-explosive and armor-piercing rounds. It had a range of up to 24 kilometers and was capable of delivering devastating firepower on the battlefield. The self-propelled artillery vehicle had a crew of six and was based on the chassis of the T-10 heavy tank. It had a top speed of 50 km/h and was equipped with a range of advanced sensors and communication equipment to aid in battlefield awareness and target acquisition. Despite its promising design, the Object 261 never entered production due to the high cost of development and the advent of more advanced self-propelled artillery vehicles, such as the 2S7 Pion. However, several prototypes were built and tested, and the self-propelled artillery vehicle remains an important piece of Soviet military technology history.
