The Shadow DN9-4B F1 OW 1979 is a mid-engined, rear-wheel drive, single-seater race car. It is constructed of a lightweight, aerodynamic monocoque chassis consisting of sheet metal and riveted aluminum honeycomb sections. To meet the regulations for international composite construction racing, it has been fitted with a 3.0-litre Ford Cosworth DFV engine powering a Hewland five-speed manual gearbox and a lightweight ventilated disc and Lockheed caliper braking system. The DN9-4B has a low, crouching look with a high aerodynamic efficiency, a wide rear wing and a slide-out airbox. It boasts an adjustable windscreen-- allowing the driver to change the angle of the floating pillars with the cockpit tightly integrated with the chassis. The front suspension consists of lightweight double wishbones with inboard rocker arm-actuated coil springs and dampers, while the rear suspension is a simple and nimble transverse link with outboard dampers. To further reduce weight, the brakes are aluminum in construction while the cast-magnesium alloy wheels are shod with Avon tires. The DN9-4B is an impressive performer with the boosted power of the Cosworth engine and optimum downforce, giving comparable performance to the 1981 Ferrari 126CK and allowing it to remain competitive with any other contemporary single-seater.
