The Ro 80 is the last automobile sold under the German brand NSU. It was produced between 1967 and 1977. In addition to an innovative aerodynamic line for the time, it is distinguished by the Comotor engine which is a Wankel rotary piston engine. The first NSU Ro 80 rolled off the production line on October 19, 1967, it carried the serial number 80001061. This car, designed by Claus Luthe, has a futuristic line. It will be a source of inspiration for the following generations. The Ro in the name stands for Rotationskolben as opposed to K for Kolben, a German word meaning Pistons (eg, Volkswagen K70 engine). The 80 refers to the 80s to evoke the future. The Ro 80 has changed very little during its ten years of production. In September 1969, the rectangular optics incorporating the broken-plane profile of the grille were replaced by flat and twin halogen headlights and air extraction vents appear on the pillar behind the doors as well as on the copy of presentation, registered HN-HC 517 and all following. In August 1970, a slightly redesigned plastic grille replaced the metal grille of the first models, and a slight facelift took place in May 1975: the automobiles were fitted with enlarged taillights and rubber inserts in the bumpers, bearing the total length of the car to 4,795 mm, or 15 mm more. In 1968, after one year of production, 5,986 cars left the line, then 7,811 in 1969, with a slight drop in 1970 to 7,200 units. During the following three years, this production decreases further to be limited to around 3,000 - 4,000 copies per year. The relatively high consumption of the rotary engine penalizes the car after the increases in the price of fuel which accompanied the oil crisis of 1973, and between 1974 and 1976, the annual production is well below 2000 units. When it ceased in April 1977, 37,389 Ro 80 were produced in ten years. In 1968, it was voted car of the year in Europe.
