The Mercedes-Benz W196 F1 GP OW 1954 was a race car used in Formula One Grand Prix Races during 1954 and 1955. This historic race car was designed by Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Hans Scherenberg and was powered by the legendary 2.5-liter, 60-degree, M196 inline 8-cylinder engine. It was the first Mercedes to feature a desmodromic valvetrain and was fitted with a five-speed transmission. The W196 was aerodynamically designed to be very low-profile and streamline, featuring a long nose and tail sections covered with punched aluminium panels. Its robust chassis was made of steel and fitted with De Dion rear suspension, a live axle, and anti-roll bar. The bodywork was covered with an aluminium magnesium alloy and curved glass windows were fitted to provide increased visibility. The W196 came with Dunlop disc brakes and was the first car to feature a 6-speed transmission. The powerful engine and advanced chassis design allowed the W196 to win 9 World Championship races and set several track records. The W196 F1 GP OW 1954 is considered one of the most iconic racing cars of its time and has become a symbol of the golden years of racing.
