The MercedesBenz 300SL is the first sports car of the West German brand MercedesBenz of the postwar period. The model was first shown at the 1954 New York Auto Show as a street version of the W194 race car. The idea for the creation came from the American luxury car dealer Max Hoffman who caught the interest of wealthy highspeed car enthusiasts in the booming postwar American market. Initially the car was produced only in a twoseater coupe with unique doors such as Gullwing but in 1957 an open version appeared a roadster. The ideological successor of the MercedesBenz 300SL is the 2011 model year MercedesBenz SLS AMG which has adopted many stylistic features and brand doors from this model.
