The Lamborghini Countach is a supercar produced by the Italian automaker Lamborghini between 1974 and 1990. This model, which replaced the Lamborghini Miura, has itself given way to the Lamborghini Diablo. The Lamborghini Countach was made as a reaction to the Lamborghini Jarama, which engineer Paolo Stanzani considered to be a mistake because it was too wise for Lamborghini. Paolo Stanzani then asked Marcello Gandini to design the most extravagant car possible. The Lamborghini Countach is, together with the Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer, the most important model in the sports car market of the 1970s. At the Geneva International Motor Show in March 1971, Lamborghini presented a concept study called LP500. A serial production of the vehicle was not envisaged, but the study pleases, so much so that Lamborghini decides to carry out and market a model resembling it. However, many details are changed. The 5-liter V12 engine of the LP500 prototype became in 1974, along with the LP400, a 4-liter which would nevertheless become famous. The name LP means Longitudionale Posteriore with reference to the position of the engine. The name Countach comes from a Piedmontese slang expression meaning fabulous. It marks the expression of astonishment and admiration that the Turin-based industrialist Bertone would have released at the sight of the car, out on the road for the first time.
