The KrAZ 256 truck, released in 1977, was designed and manufactured in the Ukraine and was made to serve as an all-purpose freight, military or passenger hauler. This reliable workhorse had the modern features of a 1978 truck, but without the modern luxury. It was capable of travelling at a top speed of 65 miles per hour along bumpy roads with a weight capacity of 11 tons. It had a post-Soviet designed cab with partial opening windows, a manual transmission, and adjustable bucket seats. The exterior of the KrAZ 256 was painted a muddy red with chrome accents on the mirrors, corners, and grille. The frame was constructed out of anodized steel and aluminum, often with rugged steel beefing plates and mudguards to protect from dirt and rust. It also featured a long rear overhang, ten wheels, and eight wheelbases ranging from 3400 to 5000 mm. The truck was also capable of venturing off-road, with a rugged independent suspension. With a two-speed transfer case and four-wheel-drive, it allowed for traverse of rugged terrain. This off-beat progress was aided with robust triple bridges, SO-106 reduction gears, 8x16 off-road tires with low-aspect diameter, which aided traction. The KrAZ 256 was highly sought after in the Soviet Union, as it was an excellent reliable service vehicle. Its robust strength enabled it to conquer any terrain and carry a wide range of passengers and loads. Its durability and simplicity is what kept it in production for 23 years and deemed it as one of the icons of Soviet transportation.
