Specifications Fiat X1/9 Bertone Targa 1972 blueprint

The Fiat X1 / 9 is a hardtop spider car, manufactured by the Italian manufacturer Fiat Auto between 1972 and 1989. At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1965, Fiat presented the Fiat 850 Coup spider. This small sports car with a rear engine, with very elegant and fine lines, is signed by the master Bertone. It will be a great commercial success. In 1966, Fiat Auto launched studies for the future Fiat 128, a model which was to replace the Fiat 1100-103. This very modern sedan is revolutionary. The brands first front-wheel drive, it was launched in 1969, in the 2 and 4-door sedan and station wagon versions. The following year, a coup was presented and the convertible was missing, which was to take over from the 850 Spider. Fiat then envisaged two possibilities for the future spider: front-wheel drive or propulsion with an engine in rear overhang, as on the 850. The Carrozzeria Bertone, which is responsible for the design, offers a third solution: the engine in rear central position. This arrangement can guarantee better stability, but is more expensive to manufacture. It is inaugurated, by Bertone, on the fabulous Lamborghini Miura. Fiat management is hesitant, especially for financial reasons. The engineer Dante Giacosa, head of the Fiat design office, already imagined, in 1964, a car equipped with an engine placed in the rear center position, the G 31 project, which has no follow-up. Bertone presented at the Turin Motor Show in 1969, an Autobianchi prototype - resulting from the G 31 project - the Runabout dream car. The Autobianchi brand, which is part of the Fiat galaxy, has always served as a laboratory for Fiat. Fiat has still not made a decision on its future convertible. The Autobianchi Runabout prototype is stored in the Bertone workshop, in Grugliasco, near Turin, under a tarpaulin. In 1971, during an unexpected visit to the Bertone workshops, for other reasons, Gianni Agnelli discovered, in a corner, the prototype of a production model, made on the basis of the Runabout. Very interested, he took the car out and very quickly decided to have it put into production. The Fiat X1 / 9 was presented at the Turin Motor Show in 1972. If its name does not meet the standards of the brand, it is because it must be a separate model in the Fiat range and with such futuristic lines, it must remain a little enigmatic. The X 1/9 uses the mechanical foundations of the Fiat 128, notably the 1300 engine of the 128 Rallye and 128 Coupe versions, from 1971, but reversed. Sedans and coupes are front-wheel drive, the X 1/9 is rear-wheel drive. The X 1/9 was restyled in March 1976, its 1300 engine was replaced at the end of 1978 by a 1500 cc and became the X 1/9 Five Speed, fitted with a five-speed gearbox. The X1 / 9 is exported widely to the United States, with the 1290cc, 60hp engine of the 128 Coup, and the 1498cc of the Fiat Ritmo, electronic fuel injection and anti-pollution devices as standard, which reduce fuel consumption. power at 75 hp. Rumor has it that the restyling of 1976 and the disappearance of the 1,300 cm3 engine are the consequence of the great commercial success on the other side of the Atlantic which absorbs more than 70 of the overall production of the model. She is nicknamed the Baby Ferrari. The European version, with the Fiat 1498 cc engine, offers 85 hp and a top speed of 180 km / h, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 10 s. From 1981, almost all models manufactured were exported to the United States. In March 1982, Fiat, which wanted to recover a production line for other models, entrusted Bertone with the entire production. The X 1/9 will become the Bertone X 1/9, with identical mechanics, but a different and more luxurious presentation. Bertone produced several special series of the X1 / 9, including one with two-tone paint and leather interior upholstery, such as the X 1/9 IN from 1982. Production stopped in 1989, with the Gran Finale version, fitted with standard 14-inch alloy rims and mica paint. In total, around 174,000 copies were produced between 1972 and 1989. The X1 / 9 is the first and only car in the history of more than 100 years of the Fiat Auto brand with a mid-engine, two-seater and hard-top spider type, until the arrival in 1995 of the Fiat Barchetta.
