The Fiat 508C, renamed Balilla 1100 by the Italians, was a car manufactured by the Italian manufacturer Fiat from 1937 to 1953 in different versions 508C - 1100 A - B E. The project was based on the evolution of the old Fiat 508 Balilla from 1932. Presented and produced in 1937, the new Balilla was codenamed 508 C. In reality, this new Balilla had hardly retained anything. from the old series. The body line was inspired, slightly smaller, by the very aerodynamic one of the Fiat 1500 6 cylinder which had caused a sensation when it was launched in 1935. It was built on a new separate chassis comprising two large side rails and an element central in X, inaugurated an avant-garde hydraulic braking system. The distribution was overhead valves. Equipped with independent wheels at the front, it kept a rigid rear axle for simple reasons of limiting noise in the passenger compartment. The car was only available with a 4-door body with opposing opening, without a central pillar, but retained the principle of the trunk accessible from the inside. The spare wheel was placed, as required by custom and vehicle class, under body protection placed on the trunk outside. Equipped with the famous Fiat 108C engine of 1,089 cm3 with overhead valves developing 32 then 35 hp, this car, ahead of its time, had a 4-speed gearbox, hydraulic brakes, independent front wheels, a modern all-steel 4-door body with no center pillar and brilliant performance often not found in even higher-class competition models. It will be available in sedan, coupe and convertible versions. A long version 508L was developed for taxis, with a wheelbase extended by 30 cm to accommodate 3 rows of seats. Derived utility versions will also be marketed in 1938: a van and a pick-up with 650 kg of payload. In 1939, responding to a call for tenders from the Army, Fiat presented the 508 C Militare Coloniale which was widely used by the King of Italys army during World War II from Libya to Russia as well as by Wehrmacht officers. The 508C series will remain in production at the Lingotto factory, without any changes, until the eve of World War II. Approximately 57,000 copies will be produced.
