Specifications Gloster Javelin blueprint

The Gloster Javelin is a British twin-engine, all-weather, night, and interceptor fighter aircraft that first entered service with the Royal Air Force in 1956. Designed as an all-weather interceptor, the Javelin was capable of reaching supersonic speeds in level flight and was armed with four 30mm Aden cannons and provision for a collection of limited-range air-to-air missiles. Operating primarily within the NATO air defence system, the Javelin made a significant contribution to the cessation of the Cold War. The Javelin was a large and impressive aircraft, longer than it was tall and uniquely configured with its two Avon 200 turbojet engines mounted back-to-back on the top of the fuselage. This distinctive arrangement gave the pilot good visibility while also allowing the Javelin to have a low-wing position, a design feature considered essential for a modern air-superiority fighter. Like many other aircraft of the era, the Javelin was constructed of metal with flush hinges and other details to reduce drag and assist in pilots maneuverability. In addition to its engines, the Javelin was equipped with four Aden cannons, located in the same nosecone, and surplus stores could be carried beneath the fuselage. The Javelin was designed to have excellent speed capabilities and was capable of reaching a maximum speed of Mach .94, making it one of the fastest aircraft of its era. In addition to its sheer speed, the Javelin was also incredibly maneuverable and could climb to an altitude of about 43,000 feet. Finally, thanks to its all-weather capability and its radar system, the Javelin had a wide range of tactical capabilities, including air-to-air combat and night intercepts. In service with the Royal Air Force for over thirty years, the Gloster Javelin proved to be an invaluable interceptor aircraft and an important part of the NATO air defence system before it was retired in 1988. A distinctive and remarkable machine, the Javelin was a valuable tool in keeping the peace during the Cold War.
