The MiG 23MF is a fourth-generation fighter jet developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. It was designed to provide air superiority in a wide range of altitudes and speeds, and was selected to become the principal fighter of the military of many Warsaw Pact nations. The MiG 23MF is a single-engine, twin-seater jet whose design is based on the legendary MiG 21. It features a trapezoidal delta wing that provides good maneuverability and stability in flight. It is powered by a single RD-33 turbofan engine and is capable of speeds up to 2.2 mach (1,400 mph). It is equipped with an in-flight refueling probe, an optional KS-2IT Air-to-Air refueling system, and a radar system. The MF variant of the MiG 23 is heavily armed, featuring a 23mm twin-barrel 23-1c gun with 200 rounds, 4 hardpoints for mounting either R-60, Vympel R-60 or Kh-25 missiles, plus hardpoints for bombs and unguided rockets. Its avionics system is another point of note, including a Saphir-23MF Radar, an advanced electronic countermeasures suite designed to detect and jam hostile radar, and a modern helmet-mounted sight for easy target tracking. Overall, the MiG 23MFs combination of advanced avionics, armaments, maneuverability, and high speed make it a formidable fighter jet to be reckoned with, and an important part of the legacy of the Soviet Unions air power.
