The Neubaufahrzeug (German for new construction vehicle) was a series of experimental heavy tanks developed by Germany in the late 1930s. It was designed to fulfill the role of a multi-turreted heavy tank intended for breakthrough operations and supporting infantry assaults. The Neubaufahrzeug prototypes were large and heavily armored vehicles, weighing around 23 tons. They featured a unique multi-turreted design with a main turret housing a 75mm KwK L/24 gun and secondary turrets equipped with 37mm KwK L/45 guns or 20mm MG 151 autocannons. This configuration allowed the tank to engage multiple targets simultaneously, including enemy armor and infantry. The armor protection of the Neubaufahrzeug was relatively thick for its time, ranging from 20mm to 50mm in thickness, providing good protection against enemy fire. However, its size and weight made it less maneuverable than other tanks of its era, and it was prone to mechanical issues and breakdowns. Despite its promising design, the Neubaufahrzeug did not enter mass production. Only five prototypes were built, and they saw limited service with the German Army during the early stages of World War II. They were eventually withdrawn from frontline service due to their poor performance and replaced by more advanced tank designs, such as the Panzer III and Panzer IV. Although the Neubaufahrzeug was ultimately unsuccessful, it served as an important step in the development of German armored warfare doctrine and provided valuable lessons for future tank designs.
