The Vanwall VW5 F1 OW 1958 is a legendary front-engined Formula One Grand Prix racing car which competed in the 1958 Formula One season. Built by Vanwall, the racing team which achieved the first all-British win at the 1958 British Grand Prix, the VW5 was the result of innovative engineering pioneered by Colin Chapman. The car was powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, a configuration which was considered revolutionary at the time. The engine was paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, with early cars running on alcohol and later models using a mix of alcohol and petrol. The cars chassis was an extremely lightweight aluminium space frame, while the rear suspension featured outboard coil springs, which gave increased traction and grip performance. The car was capable of delivering 060 mph performance in under six seconds, and had a top speed of 160 mph. The Vanwall VW5 was an iconic car of the period, with its revolutionary design and outstanding performance making it a milestone of Grand Prix racing history, and a machine which will go down as one of the greats.
