The Opel Maultier, is an iconic German Second World War truck renowned for its immense capabilities and aptitude in difficult terrain. It is a robust, 3-ton half-track cargo truck, designed to aid troops mobility in particularly challenging environments such as mud and snow. The Maultier (literally: mule) was the first combat vehicle to be powered by the liquid-cooled Opel Blitz engine. This powerful yet compact 4.1-litre 6-cylinder motor produced a maximum of 100hp, allowing the truck to reach a top speed of 30mph. The Maultier had an ingenious design whereby the front half of the vehicle was powered by a set of four-wheel drive wheels, while the rear half - known as the Schlepper - was driven by a set of four independently-driven tracks. This unique combination and special design enabled the truck to achieve remarkable off-road gratings which could not be achieved by other types of vehicles. Physically, the Maultier truck had a rugged, boxy stance, with the heavy engine mounted at the front behind an armoured shield featuring a deep and imposing grille that formed a formidable facial expression. The strong frame and durable chassis were durable and reliable, encased thick, rust-proof steel to further protect the highly-essential engine. The distinct olive green colour was typically paired with white-painted rims, adding to the trucks distinctive orientation that soldiers loyally admired in the Second World War.
