The McLaren MP4/5 Formula 1 of 1989 is a revolution in the art of Grand Prix driving. Developed as an update to the highly successful MP4/3, the MP4/5 was light and aerodynamic, with a low center of gravity. Developed using the latest wind tunnel technology, the car had superior aerodynamic performance, making it a formidable challenger on the race track. The main feature of the MP4/5 was its Honda V10 engine. Providing around 620 BHP, the engine gave the car tremendous power on the straights. This was well complemented by a Honda 5-speed gearbox, extremely quick and reliable. Body and chassis-wise, the MP4/5 featured a carbon fiber and aluminum monocoque construction. Made of honeycomb panels, this was an extremely lightweight and rigid chassis, providing superb handling. Thanks to its aerodynamic profile, it also produced a significant amount of downforce at speed. The car also boasted a superior suspension system. Front and rear double wishbones were designed to provide the ideal balance between roadholding and stability. The brakes used were AP Racing inboard discs, offering a remarkable performance in all conditions. All this, together with the extra advantage derived from carrying less fuel because of the new smaller tanks, made the McLaren MP4/5 a formidable challenge to all its competitors. It was a car that was capable of domination in the right hands, winning the 1989 Formula One championship in the process.
